Gun Safety Contract
Are you interested in teaching your child about shooting sports safety? If your child is enjoys rubber band shooters, blow guns, bb guns, bows and arrows or anything involving shooting at targets, you have a responsibility to teach them responsible sporting practices. One way to help emphasize the importance of shooting sports safety is establish some ground rules, explain expectations and agree on safe use contract.
Having a contract can help define expectations, and consequences for breaking the agreement. The agreement or contract should be aligned with safe handling practices. Here are some suggestions of what I would consider adding to my own gun safety contract:
I, WoodyThings Junior, promise to:
TREAT every weapon as if it were loaded
NEVER point the weapon at anything you don’t intend to shoot
KEEP your finger straight and off the trigger until you’re ready to fire
KEEP your weapon on safe until you’re ready to fire
ALWAYS point the muzzle in a safe direction
ALWAYS keep my finger off the trigger until ready to shoot
ALWAYS keep the instrument unloaded until ready to use
KNOW my target and what is beyond
NEVER fire in a direction in which there are people or any other potential for mishap
