Here’s a look at a recent custom order we delivered to a fellow Marine Corps unit for a Marine’s going-away gift.
Going away gifts are given to service members by their peers whenever the service member transfers to a new unit or leaves military service.
This version is themed after a spartan helmet for a modern day warrior.

We begin our design by digitally sketching a Spartan helmet silhouette, and then cutting the template in our Cricut cutter. We then used the template to trace the design unto sanded plywood.
Once the lines were traced, we cut the piece using a band saw before sanding and painting the piece flat black.
We cut a second piece that matches the silhouette background, but opted for staining the piece in early American vs. painting it. We like the contrast in the two textures and colors. The back of the chest is light enough that it can be signed by the gifting party, allowing everyone to participate and leave a personalized message for their fellow Marine.
A going away message which includes the Marine’s rank, name, unit, and a quote was affixed to the front of the helmet, near where the mouth would be. If you look closely, you will find we added the Spartan helmet silhouette and the Eagle Globe and Anchor behind the message. We then completed the design by placing the message behind plexiglass and staked it down with brass colored tacks to compliment the stained background color.
We totally dig how this simple design came out, and cant wait to make a few more.
